Frequently Asked Questions – West Shore Psychology, Georgetown ON
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. We provide virtual therapy sessions by secure video and telephone. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have learned that effective treatment can be delivered virtually, offering flexibility and accessibility. Virtual therapy allows us to work with clients across Ontario, including those who may not be able to attend sessions in person in Georgetown.
How do I set up an initial appointment?
You can set up your first appointment by phone at 416-886-0480 or by email at drtracimcfarlane@gmail.com. Wait times for initial appointments may vary depending on availability.
What is your intake process?
The first appointment is an assessment session (50–90 minutes). We will review your history, personal background, current concerns, and therapy goals. You will also have the chance to ask questions. If you are comfortable with the plan and feel we are a good fit, therapy begins in the following session.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most treatment sessions are 50 minutes. Occasionally, a longer or shorter session may be recommended depending on clinical needs.
How long does therapy last?
The duration of therapy varies from person to person. Some clients attend a short course of therapy, while others engage in longer-term treatment and support. Factors include frequency of sessions, the type of issues addressed, and individual progress. We regularly use symptom measures to track outcomes and adjust treatment as needed.
How frequent are therapy sessions?
Most clients attend therapy weekly or bi-weekly. Some may attend more often (e.g., twice weekly) depending on treatment needs, and many choose to reduce frequency as therapy progresses.
How do I know if therapy is working?
It’s common to feel uncomfortable at first as old coping strategies (e.g., binge eating, avoidance, drinking) are replaced with healthier ones. Over time, clients typically notice meaningful improvement. We may use self-report tools, symptom tracking, and progress graphs to monitor changes in areas such as anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, eating disorder behaviours, or substance use.
Are your services covered by OHIP?
No. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover private psychotherapy provided by non-MD practitioners. However:
Many clients receive coverage through extended health benefits.
Services may be claimed as a medical expense on Canadian income tax returns.
Please check your plan with your insurance provider for details.
